Academician Zhensheng Li Won the Supreme Award of Science and Technology of China
Professor Zhensheng Li, the co-founder of the State Key Laboratory of Plant Cell and Chromosome Engineering (PCCE), is a member of Chinese Academy of Sciences and fellow of the Third World Academy of Sciences. He has systematically studied the genetics of distant hybridization between common wheat and wheatgrass during last 55 years, and developed many important cytogenetic lines and a series of new wheat cultivars including Xiaoyan 6.
Xiaoyan 6 has been widely grown in China for more than 25 years. The total cumulative acreage grown by Xiaoyan 6 and its derivative varieties has reached 30 million hectares, and has increased wheat production in China by 11.5 million tons. Professor Li’s research has brought huge socio-economic benefits and set an unprecedented successful example in the development and utilization of wheat varieties through wide hybridization breeding. Owing to his achievements in wheat genetics and breeding, Professor Li was awarded the Supreme Award of Science and Technology of China in the year 2006 by the Chinese government.
Other Awards
The State Key Laboratory of Plant Cell and Chromosome Engineering, as a basic and applied research laboratory in agrobiology, has been devoting to development of agricultural science and technology in China. Owing to the excellent research progress and contributions to Chinese science and technology, many members of PCCE laboratory won awards (6 awarded by the Chinese government, 3 by CAS and 7 by the provincial government) during last 20 years.
